Guwahati: The Election Commission of India opened a case against former Nagaon District Commissioner Devasish Sharma. Officials logged the complaint into the National Grievance Services portal following a formal request from Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain. The move targets alleged administrative irregularities and potential political bias.
Hussain submitted his initial complaint on August 30 and followed up with a detailed representation on September 3. He provided photos as evidence of Sharma engaging in public outreach activities before leaving office. The MP wants an independent, time-bound inquiry into the official’s tenure. He specifically urged the Commission to block Sharma from leaving government service until the probe concludes. It is too late for that. The Assam government already accepted the bureaucrat’s request for voluntary retirement.
Sharma makes no secret of his next move. He confirmed plans to enter the race for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bye-election under the BJP banner. He credits the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his career pivot. "I will join the Bharatiya Janata Party. We are already in touch and, after my resignation, we spoke to local MLA Pijush Hazarika. They will give us a date to formally join the party," Sharma said.
The ECI process remains in the early stages. Registering the grievance does not prove the claims made by Hussain. The Commission has forwarded the file to senior officials to demand a response. Authorities must now determine if the former administrator broke any rules while in office.
