Kohima: Kiphire faces a governance crisis. The United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) warns that widespread administrative absenteeism is paralyzing the district. Surprise inspections on May 25 and 26 revealed senior officials rarely show up for work. They treat their roles as optional.
Many department heads live in Kohima or Dimapur. They only appear for monthly meetings. Subordinate staff must constantly travel out of the district just to secure basic signatures. This drain on resources halts public services and burdens lower-ranking workers.
The USSC petitioned the Deputy Commissioner to act. They want the government to enforce strict service rules. The group argues that the district cannot suffer due to the personal choices of a few bureaucrats. "The development of Kiphire cannot and must not be held hostage to the convenience of a few," the USSC stated.
The group demands the application of a no work, no pay policy. They might go to court if the state fails to step in. A Writ of Mandamus could force these officials to do their jobs. The student body also proposed tech-based attendance tracking and better housing for staff. They want a new oversight committee to watch over attendance and service delivery. Kiphire needs results. The USSC plans to hold officials to account until they show up.
