State officials honor Assam Rifles soldiers killed in Ukhrul ambush

Imphal: Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh paid final respects to two Assam Rifles soldiers on Tuesday. The men died in a July 6 ambush in Ukhrul district. A wreath-laying ceremony took place at Imphal Airport.

Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh served in the 40th Battalion. Suspected militants trapped them near the Lungshang River on National Highway-202. The attack left both dead.

Military leaders offered a Guard of Honour to the fallen soldiers. Senior officials from the Army, Assam Rifles, and police gathered to mark the occasion. The Chief Minister offered floral tributes and held a moment of silence for the dead.

The state remains shaken. The attack drew sharp rebukes from community groups and political figures. Many now demand a full investigation into the violence. "Paying tribute to their courage, dedication and supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation," the Chief Minister noted during the service. The bodies were flown to their native homes for final rites after the ceremony concluded.
