Guwahati: Nobojyoti Gogoi, 53, drowned on July 19 while saving his farm animals during the 2026 floods in Santak, Nazira. The flash flood trapped his home in Sivasagar, Assam, under six feet of water within minutes. Nobojyoti successfully moved his wife, Rupa Gogoi, 41, and his 10-year-old daughter, Ayushree, to safety before attempting to rescue his pigs. He saved one, but the current dragged him under while he fought for the second animal. His daughter Ayushree witnessed the entire event.
As of August 3, reports indicate 87 people died and over 1.1 million residents were affected across 25 districts in Assam. Nearly 14,000 hectares of farmland remain submerged, with Sivasagar sustaining heavy damage. Principriya Gogoi, 12, was 45 kilometres away at her uncle's house in Amguri when her father died. She never saw his body. "I wasn't here. I couldn't see him. Not even his mortal remains," she said. "This is my biggest regret."
The family lives in a home cleaned of silt, but they have left Nobojyoti’s school bag and an ID card hanging on their door. Nobojyoti worked his entire life to ensure his two daughters would pass the UPSC exam. Now, the sisters are determined to finish that work. Both girls are committed to their studies to honor his ambition. Rupa Gogoi faces the heavy burden of supporting their future education alone. Principriya maintains her focus on the goal. She will become an IAS officer to make her father proud.
