Gangtok: New water conservation, sanitation, and environmental restoration projects are now active across five villages in the Soreng district of Sikkim. Supported by the SBI Foundation and executed by the AROH Foundation, these initiatives were officially presented during World Environment Day celebrations in Karthok, Malbasey, Singling, Budang, and Mangsari.

To bolster groundwater recharge and wastewater management, workers constructed 42 soak pits expected to assist 168 local residents. The initiative also focused on hygiene through the installation of a sharps disposal pit at the Tharpu Primary Health Sub-Centre, which serves more than 1,600 people. Waste management facilities, including composite pits, were added to the Mangsari School and the local Pranami Mandir to serve over 270 students, staff, and devotees combined.

Addressing water security, the teams installed two 10,000-litre storage tanks in Budang and Karthok to assist 58 households during dry spells. Additionally, they restored irrigation canals in Mangsari and Budang to support 128 farming households. In Malbasey, Budang, and Mangsari, the construction of check dams aims to improve water retention and prevent soil erosion for over 1,100 households.

The effort included a Jan Van Plantation Drive where 400 saplings were planted to aid environmental restoration. According to the implementing agencies, the projects were carried out with community participation and aimed at "strengthening water security, sanitation infrastructure and environmental sustainability in the region."
