Sikkim Becomes Full-Fledged Member of Brahmaputra Board

Guwahati: Sikkim has officially joined the Brahmaputra Board as a full-fledged member, marking a significant milestone for the state's infrastructure and water resource management. This development was confirmed during a series of high-level sessions held in Guwahati, where Sikkim's Minister for Water Resources, Sonam Lama, represented the state alongside department officials L.D. Lamtha and Rajiv Subba.

The meetings, which included the 14th High Powered Review Board of the Brahmaputra Board and the 6th Governing Body Meeting of the North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWALM), were presided over by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil. Other notable attendees included Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhusan Chaudhary, as well as representatives from across the North Eastern region.

During the proceedings, Union Minister Paatil stressed the importance of accelerating ongoing water projects to align with the developmental vision set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Cabinet ministers Sonowal and Chaudhary underscored the strategic potential of local water resources in diversifying the agricultural economy, creating jobs, and enhancing regional infrastructure.

Minister Sonam Lama welcomed the inclusion of Sikkim and West Bengal into the board, describing the move as a historic step that will elevate the state's progress. He utilized the platform to address specific challenges faced by Sikkim, expressing optimism that the collaboration would yield effective and sustainable solutions for the region. The day concluded with the virtual inauguration of a new international hostel at NERIWALM, aimed at bolstering institutional capabilities for land and water management research.
