Guwahati: Shyamkanu Mahanta, a prime accused in the death of Assam music icon Zubeen Garg, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court requesting bail. This legal move follows a rejection of his plea by the Gauhati High Court. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter on Tuesday.
The case, which centers on the death of Zubeen Garg in September 2025, remains a high-profile legal matter in Assam. Before the High Court reached its decision, Justice Mitali Thakuria heard detailed arguments from both sides. During these proceedings, Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia urged the court to deny the request, stating he "strongly opposed the plea and urged the court not to grant bail."
Other individuals implicated in the case currently remain in judicial custody. A Special Fast Track Court previously denied bail applications for four other co-accused: Sandipan Garg, Amritprabha Mahanta, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya. Those individuals were ordered to remain in custody while their trial continues. Legal observers across the state are awaiting the outcome of the upcoming Supreme Court hearing as the judicial process proceeds.
