Shillong: The Meghalaya government is pushing its Farmers Market initiative to help local growers earn more money. The program bypasses middlemen by connecting farmers directly with shoppers. This creates a faster supply chain for fresh produce. The Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department hosted the seventh edition of the market in Shillong at 1917 iTEAMS. Farmers showcased a variety of goods including plums, peaches, cabbage, and organic vegetables.
This market empowers small-scale farmers through the Meghalaya Farmers Empowerment Commission. It encourages organic farming and informs the public about local food production. Growers say the face-to-face interaction builds trust with customers. One participant stated, "Bregiparang baksa joljol agangrike bregipani ka·donganiko bilakbatataha aro uamangni man·anirangna pala-simani cholrangko apalbatataha."
The initiative now includes a hyperlocal platform called SOMOI. This partnership allows city residents to order fresh farm goods for home delivery. Local youths serve as delivery partners, creating new jobs. Officials claim the market supports struggling farmers and stabilizes the statewide food supply.
