Shillong: Workers swarmed Khyndailad on Monday. They started cutting down old, unused utility cables that had turned the city skyline into a tangled mess of wires. This cleanup marks the first step in a massive state project to polish Shillong before the National Games arrive.
Crews sorted the remaining live wires into tight bundles. They fastened them securely to utility poles to eliminate the safety hazards of hanging lines. The work aims to kill the visual clutter that has long plagued the busy commercial hub.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently confirmed the government's plan to clear these lines across the city. This project will move in phases. It focuses on boosting urban looks and fixing old infrastructure for the influx of athletes and visitors. The government intends to replace chaos with a cleaner, safer environment, noting the effort is part of "broader efforts being undertaken by the Meghalaya Government to upgrade Shillong’s civic infrastructure and public spaces in the lead-up to the prestigious multi-sport event."
