Guwahati: Rescue teams are scouring the Burhidihing river today. Police and the State Disaster Response Force launched the operation Saturday in Tinsukia district. They are looking for Ujjal Choudhury, a local television reporter who reportedly jumped from the newly built Margherita bridge.
Choudhury was riding a scooter from Ledo to Margherita with his colleague, Nitul Bharali. The pair reached the bridge, and Choudhury asked to get off. Bharali told police, "I gave him a ride on my scooter as he wanted to come to Margherita with me. He said he wanted to meet someone. When we reached the bridge, he asked me to stop. The moment I stopped, he jumped. I couldn't even park my scooter properly or get a chance to catch hold of him."
The jump happened instantly. Margherita Police arrived shortly after the incident to coordinate the search. High water levels and violent currents from steady rainfall are slowing down the responders. Police are still looking into why the journalist jumped, but the motive remains a mystery.
