Guwahati: Rupamoni Gorh has cemented her place in history by becoming the first woman from Assam to scale Mount Everest. A resident of Lilabari in the Lakhimpur district, Gorh achieved the historic climb on Thursday as part of an all-women expedition team from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

The mountaineers faced severe challenges during their ascent, including treacherous icy slopes, extreme weather, and the dangerous death zone located above 8,000 meters. Her successful climb has been celebrated across the state, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly praising her as an inspiration for the youth of the region.

Raised in a humble farming family, Gorh developed a deep passion for adventure early in life despite limited financial resources. Her father, Joysing, works in agriculture, while her mother, Kamalawati, is an Anganwadi assistant. After earning an Arts degree, she joined the ITBP in 2020, eventually leading her toward this milestone achievement on the world's highest peak.
