Guwahati: The Chhattisgarh High Court dropped a criminal case against two Assam men after they apologized for insulting Governor Ramen Deka. Pranab Kalita and Lakshyadhar Rajbongshi faced police charges in Raipur following their social media posts. The pair sought to quash the legal proceedings by taking their plea to the High Court.
Both sides reached a settlement. The court ended the case once the men met specific terms. Kalita and Rajbongshi submitted unconditional written apologies to the court. They also faced direct orders on how to handle their public amends. The court mandated that they post these apologies on the same social media platforms used for the original insults.
They must also print their apologies in newspapers back home in Assam. The court officially closed the matter after the men followed these instructions. As the court noted regarding the resolution, the conditions "formed part of the relief granted to the petitioners after both sides agreed to the settlement."
