Road Construction Impacts Tourism and Daily Life in Meghalaya

Shillong: Cabinet Minister and Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui acknowledged that the ongoing construction of the Shillong-Tamabil road is disrupting both tourism and local livelihoods in Dawki and Mawlynnong. While the Union government provides the necessary funding for the project, the minister noted that residents are facing temporary hardships during the development process.

Addressing the impact on the local economy, Rymbui emphasized that the region depends on solid infrastructure, such as reliable road networks and telecommunications. Regarding the project timeline, he said, “Tourist inflow and local livelihoods have been affected, but we must be patient.”

The minister also highlighted significant safety concerns, particularly because the difficult terrain is prone to landslides during the monsoon season. He urged executing agencies to prioritize worker and public safety while working to complete the construction as quickly as possible.

Beyond the Dawki project, Rymbui addressed the persistent traffic congestion in Shillong. He explained that land acquisition remains a major obstacle to widening city roads. The government plans to alleviate these bottlenecks through projects like the Shillong Western Bypass and new flyovers, alongside the long-term expansion of the New Shillong Township to reduce urban density.
