Imphal: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Guwahati has publicly distanced itself from the transport of patients and the deployment of security personnel following violent protests at its facility on Monday. The unrest was sparked by allegations that three injured youths receiving care were militants, a situation that forced security forces to use tear gas and batons to clear the area.
The three patients, who belong to the Kuki community, were transferred to RIMS after receiving initial treatment at the 183 Military Hospital in Leimakhong. Security forces handled the transfer, while protesters raised concerns regarding the security provided to these individuals, comparing the situation to movement restrictions in the Kangpokpi district.
In an official statement, the institute emphasized that its mandate is strictly limited to medical care. The administration asserted that its duty begins only when patients arrive at the hospital and noted that it remains committed to humanitarian principles. RIMS declared that "healthcare services are provided to all patients irrespective of their background or circumstances."
Hospital officials also warned that campus disruptions threaten the safety of patients and staff. The administration specifically condemned the use of smoke bombs and mock explosives during the demonstration, labeling the behavior a severe risk to healthcare operations. Authorities are currently maintaining a security presence around the hospital as investigations into the incident continue.
