Residents protest for road safety after fatal accident in Assam

Guwahati: A fatal road accident in Assam's Nagaon district claimed the life of a pedestrian late Saturday night. The victim, Laxmi Mondal, was struck by a speeding motorcycle in the South Bhomoraguri area of Ambagan. Medical staff at Jakhalabandha Hospital declared her dead shortly after the incident.

The two men on the motorcycle, identified as Sanjit Basumatary and Bishnu Basumatary of Shalpara, sustained injuries during the crash and are currently receiving medical treatment. Police have seized the motorcycle, registration number AS-12-AF-7263, as part of an ongoing investigation into the collision.

Following the tragedy, local residents blocked the Nagaon to Nolaltoli state highway to protest against inadequate traffic control. The demonstrators demanded immediate safety improvements to prevent future accidents. Officers from the Ambagan police station intervened to manage the crowd and promised to address the community's safety concerns. The road was cleared once residents received these assurances from the police.
