Plastic bags, discarded containers, and rotting food waste now turn public spots into eyesores. This mess creates foul odors and attracts pests like rats and stray dogs.
Rain makes the situation worse. Trash flows into drains and blocks waterways, leading to potential waterlogging. Local resident Hillary Basaiawmoit expressed frustration at the behavior of her neighbors. "It is a very bad sight to see garbage dumped along the roadside when the collection truck already comes regularly. People should wait for the collection vehicle and dispose of their waste properly. The roads and public spaces should not be treated as dumping grounds," Basaiawmoit said.
Locals pointed to a clear lack of civic sense. Esther Rynjah noted that keeping the area clean requires shared responsibility between the authorities and the public. Residents now want closer monitoring of common dumping points. They also want officials to punish those who repeatedly litter. Community members are pleading for everyone to support the sanitation workers by holding onto their refuse until the trucks arrive.
