Guwahati: The TYPA Golaghat District Committee has selected esteemed Assamese scholar and literary critic Dr. Hiren Gohain to receive the 2026 Swahid Kushal Konwar Award. The organization plans to present the honor on June 15 to recognize his extensive work in literature, social thought, and political discourse.
Born in 1939, Dr. Gohain established himself as a prominent intellectual voice after returning from his studies at Cambridge. He significantly influenced Assamese literary circles by introducing Anglo-American New Criticism and integrating Marxist perspectives into his work. His bibliography includes major titles such as Sahityar Satya, Biswayatan, and Assam: A Burning Question, alongside four volumes of memoirs detailing historical and social shifts.
Dr. Gohain’s influence extends well beyond his academic publications. He served as the founder president of the Asomiya Sahitya Sanmilani and played a key role as a mediator during peace negotiations between the Indian government and ULFA. His career has been marked by numerous accolades, including a 1989 Sahitya Akademi Award for his research on Srimanta Sankardev. This latest award reinforces his long-standing role in shaping the intellectual landscape of Assam and the Northeast.
