Imphal: Rahul Gandhi took aim at the Centre after militants torched houses in two tribal villages in Manipur’s Kamjong district. The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha argued the latest arson proves the situation is spiraling despite President’s Rule. Violence continues to plague the region. Gandhi insisted the unrest stems from the current administration’s policies.
"Manipur has been burning for years, and again, 20 homes have been reduced to ashes in the fire of hatred and violence," Gandhi wrote in a post on X. He blamed the Modi government’s divisive ideology for splitting the nation along lines of religion, caste, and identity. He claimed the Prime Minister has offered no empathy to those affected.
Militants struck near the India-Myanmar border on July 1. Officials report that fire destroyed 10 thatched homes in the village of Phaimol. Residents had already fled the area, so no injuries occurred. The Kuki Inpi Manipur organization blamed the attack on armed groups crossing the border from Myanmar.
A retaliatory strike hit Kongkan Thana and neighboring Tangkhul Naga villages shortly after. Local representative Leishiyo Keishing confirmed that 12 homes belonging to the Tangkhul Naga community burned to the ground. Official estimates had initially placed the destruction at eight houses. Thousands have lost their lives as families remain displaced throughout the state.
