PWD Bills NHIDCL for Shillong-Dawki Road Damages

Shillong: The Public Works Department wants Rs 1.72 crore. They submitted the damage estimate to the Additional Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills following construction work on the Shillong-Dawki road. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited project caused the trouble.

Deputy Solicitor General of India Dr. N. Mozika detailed the project status during Tuesday’s High Court of Meghalaya hearing. He said the NHIDCL awarded a contract to install crash barriers at all vulnerable spots. Crews have six weeks to finish that job. The agency also donated an ambulance to the Pongkung Primary Health Centre. Workers cleared a washed-out road section and finished a village bypass.

Disputes remain over the money. Dr. Mozika argued that the PWD should have included NHIDCL officers during their initial assessment. He said, “The PWD should have conducted the assessment in the presence of NHIDCL officers.” The agency now plans its own independent inspection of Mawlieh L.P. School to report back at the next session.

Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh ordered the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner to ensure the May 20, 2026, damage letter reaches a finish. The court set September 7 for the next hearing to allow Amicus Curiae Philemon Nongbri to study the latest status report.
