Guwahati: Assam BJP MLA-elect Diganta Kalita, representing the Kamalpur constituency, has formally requested restrictions on the use of loudspeakers for the Islamic call to prayer, known as Azan. Kalita emphasized that his concerns are focused specifically on the noise amplification near the Assam Assembly and the local MLA hostel, rather than the act of prayer itself. Having resided in the MLA hostel for five years, he noted that the amplified daily calls have caused persistent disturbances, prompting him to review existing legal precedents and court rulings with the intention of addressing the issue through official government channels.

Simultaneously, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has addressed the broader topic of religious observance in public spaces. During a recent gathering in Lucknow, the Chief Minister stressed the necessity of conducting namaz in a regulated manner that does not interfere with public order or infringe upon the accessibility of roads. Adityanath stated that prayers should not be held on public thoroughfares and suggested that shift-based arrangements could be implemented to accommodate worshippers without causing inconvenience to the general public.

The Chief Minister underscored that the rule of law remains paramount, asserting that public infrastructure must be preserved for its intended purpose of movement. He reiterated that while the government aims to find amicable solutions through dialogue, it is committed to ensuring that public spaces are not blocked or misused, maintaining that such regulations apply equally to all citizens to preserve daily life and order.
