Protests Spread Across Manipur Over Six Abducted Naga Men

Imphal: Demonstrators gathered in Imphal East and across several Naga-inhabited districts on May 20 to demand the immediate release of six Naga men who have been held captive for nearly a week. The sit-in protest at Tribal Market in New Checkon, organized by the Naga Women Union, saw participants hold signs calling for the safe return of the hostages. Similar demonstrations took place in Senapati, Noney, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Churachandpur, Chandel, and Tamenglong.

Houreilu Kamei, speaking on behalf of the protesters, accused the government of failing to act decisively. She stated that authorities lack the necessary urgency to handle the situation, which she described as a dark and melancholic phase for the region. Kamei argued that the issue requires a political solution driven by dialogue rather than the current passive approach.

The six men were among 20 individuals abducted near Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13 following a deadly ambush at Kotlen in the Kangpokpi district. While 14 of those taken have since been released, the remaining six are allegedly being held by a suspected Kuki militant group.

Protesters expressed frustration that security forces have not taken more direct action to interrogate local residents in the area where the abduction occurred. Activists warned that continued delays in the rescue operation could further escalate tensions and place the lives of the remaining captives in significant danger.
