Guwahati: Assam Police nabbed two men and seized three kilograms of heroin Sunday. The drugs have an estimated street value between 5 and 6 crore rupees. Officers caught the suspects during a 3 am check at the Srirampur inter-state gate in Kokrajhar district.
Authorities arrested Shravan Kumar, 23, and Ashok Kumar, 25. Both men hail from Barmer, Rajasthan. Police stopped their Mahindra Camper during a routine operation along the Assam-West Bengal border. The duo allegedly moved the contraband from Guwahati toward Hasimara in West Bengal.
The smugglers built a secret chamber to hide 244 packets of heroin. To stay hidden, they slapped a National Highways Authority board on the truck and ditched the registration plates. Officers later found a license plate labeled GJ08FA7389 hidden inside the cabin. Additional Superintendent of Police Aziza Gulenur led the raid alongside Monturam Bora and K S Simte. Officials from the Simultapu police outpost assisted the effort.
"The accused are being interrogated to ascertain the broader supply chain and possible interstate connections behind the consignment." Investigators are now tracking the origin of the narcotics to dismantle the trafficking network. The police keep digging for leads on the wider supply chain.
