Police Scramble for Answers in Shillong Mass Poisoning

Shillong: Shillong police are still hunting for the person behind the mass poisoning of stray animals near the Circuit House. Twelve dogs, eight birds, and three cats are dead. The latest victim was a dog that died during recovery. No suspects have been identified yet.

Evidence handling has drawn heat. Reports suggest the Officer in Charge at the local station failed to send suspicious food samples for testing early on. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that investigators finally sent seized food items and a dead bird to the lab. "Suspected food poisoning items and a dead bird recovered during the investigation have been seized and sent for forensic examination," Syiem said.

Police registered the incident as Laban PS Case No. 49(06)2026. Authorities are citing Section 325 BNS and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Viscera samples are currently sitting at the Forensic Science Laboratory in Shillong.

Investigators are also digging up the past. They secured a court order to exhume two buried dogs on Tuesday to assist the probe. Meanwhile, detectives are pouring over local CCTV footage to spot anyone dumping toxic food. While the streets remain quiet for now, animal advocates are pushing for faster results and harsher penalties.
