Police Arrest Suspect After Girl Escapes Kidnapping Attempt in Ri-Bhoi

Shillong: An eight-year-old girl narrowly escaped an abduction attempt in Ri-Bhoi on May 27 after she managed to flee from her captor and cry for help. The girl was visiting a relative when a man identified locally as Masan allegedly lured her under the pretense of buying meat. When the child refused, the suspect slapped her and forced her onto his motorcycle.

The accused took the girl to a secluded area where three other unidentified men were waiting with additional vehicles. The victim reported that she heard the group discussing plans to place her in a yellow sack and sell her. Sensing the danger, the girl broke free and began screaming to attract attention.

Nearby workers laying water pipelines heard her distress and rushed to assist. They escorted her to the village headman, who notified her family and local authorities. The girl’s family filed a formal complaint at the Women Police Station in Nongpoh. Officers have since taken Masan into custody and are continuing to search for the remaining suspects.
