Police Arrest 17 After Tripura Election Violence

Agartala: Police arrested 17 suspects linked to post-election violence in Tripura. The state Home Department confirmed these arrests Monday, August 31, during an Assembly session. Officials detailed 45 separate complaints filed after the 2026 Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections. The department provided these figures in a written reply to a query from Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma.

Debbarma questioned the government on whether political workers faced eviction from their homes due to the unrest. The Home Department denied that any party leaders or workers were forced out. They maintained that no forced evictions occurred.

Records tell a different story. Thirty-six individuals fled their homes following the vote count. These people sought temporary shelter at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Youth Home in Agartala. The government noted these citizens stayed for a few days before returning. As the Home Department stated, "All 36 people later returned to their respective homes and are currently residing there peacefully."
