Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni with two distinct handwoven stoles, spotlighting the cultural heritage of Northeast India. The gifts featured a Shirui Lily silk stole from Manipur and an Eri silk stole from Assam, serving as symbols of India's artisanal craftsmanship and diplomatic ties.
The Shirui Lily stole draws inspiration from a rare flower found exclusively on Manipur’s Shirui Kashong Peak. This bloom is deeply connected to the identity and traditions of the Tangkhul Naga community. The design reflects the flower's pale pink petals and bell shape, which hold significance in both Indian folklore and Italian history. In Italy, the lily is a long-standing symbol of grace and purity often depicted in Renaissance art.
The second gift, an Eri silk stole, showcases Assam’s renowned textile tradition. Often called peace silk, this material is celebrated for being produced through ethical, sustainable methods that do not harm the silkworm. The fabric is valued for its durability, thermal properties, and soft texture.
Officials noted that the exchange served as a form of cultural storytelling. By choosing these specific textiles, the Prime Minister highlighted shared values between India and Italy, including a mutual appreciation for tradition, artistic refinement, and environmental sustainability.
