Guwahati: Devotees are gathering at the sacred Kamakhya Temple in Assam ahead of the Ambubachi Mela, one of Northeast India's most significant religious events. Located atop the Nilachal Hills, the four-day festival marks the annual menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya and is frequently called the Mahakumbh of the East.
Temple priest Kabindra Prasad confirmed the event schedule, stating, "The Ambubachi Mela this year will begin on June 22 at 9:08 pm. On June 26, after the special puja, darshan will be conducted for all devotees. The Mela Committee is making all necessary preparations."
The temple's sanctum sanctorum will remain closed for three days during the observance to honor the belief that the Goddess is undergoing her menstrual period. During this time, traditional agricultural activities, cooking, and ritual worship are suspended. Once the doors reopen on the fourth day, thousands of saints, sadhus, and pilgrims from across the nation are expected to arrive.
Early visitors have expressed deep spiritual satisfaction regarding the atmosphere. Pilgrims like Vipul from Hyderabad noted a sense of unique positive energy, while others like Nandini Kaur shared that the experience provided them with personal peace and hope.
Local authorities and the Mela Committee are currently coordinating logistics to manage the large crowds expected throughout the festival duration.
