Kohima: Peren serves as the only planned model district headquarters in Nagaland, according to Deputy Commissioner Hiazu Meru. Spanning 3,715 acres, the site is undergoing development strictly governed by a master plan that dictates road widths and specific zones for government offices, schools, and housing.
Addressing officials at the headquarters on Monday, Meru credited Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang for the district's progress. He noted that "It has a Master Plan and we are strictly developing the District headquarter as per the Master Plan be it the width of road, the specified area demarcated for offices, educational institutions, residential area for officials, staff etc. and for private allottee."
While road connectivity has previously hampered the region, infrastructure work is currently underway. Projects connecting Jalukiepungchi and New Peren village to the town are being funded through the North Eastern Special Infrastructure Development Schemes. Meru expects these links to significantly improve access once finished.
The district is also focusing on environmental sustainability, with the District Planning and Development Board officially designating it a Green District Headquarters. This initiative includes bans on hunting, fishing, and jungle burning. Additionally, officials are reviewing proposals to establish community parks throughout the area.
The headquarters currently supports a population of about 250 people across 70 households, which includes students from the local government college and polytechnic. Administrative capacity continues to expand as well, with the offices of the Assistant Election Officer and the Senior Treasury Officer recently becoming operational.
