Itanagar: A rescue mission turned into a disaster on the Sisiri River in Dambuk. A raft carrying rescuers and stranded locals flipped in heavy currents. One person is now missing.
The operation began to save four people stuck in the Lower Dibang Valley district. Seven rafters launched into the water. They found three of the people but hit trouble on the way back. The strong current smashed the raft. Five people swam to the bank. Five others drifted downstream.
Two of those caught in the current hit a river island. One person got stuck on a floating log. The National Disaster Response Force plucked that person from the log. Authorities confirmed that four people remain trapped on the island. Officials stated that, "one of the four originally stranded persons remains missing and has not yet been located or contacted."
Six of the 11 people involved are safe. Thirty NDRF workers are on the scene. Local police and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police are helping. An Indian Air Force helicopter will join the search at 4:45 am on June 29. Disaster management teams continue to watch the water levels closely.
