Kohima: The National Socialist Women’s Organisation of Nagalim (NSWON) has issued a sharp rebuke following an alleged crackdown on a peaceful demonstration in Shokvao, Ukhrul, on June 7. The protest, led by Tangkhul Naga women, aimed to challenge the presence of the 40 Assam Rifles in the region.
According to the NSWON, the assembly was intended to address the conduct of the 40 Assam Rifles, which operates under the command of Col Sunil Singh Lunthi. The organisation maintains that the women were peacefully exercising their democratic rights to defend Naga customary institutions and local protocols. The NSWON stated that the June 7 incident was not an isolated episode, but rather a pattern that undermines public confidence.
The group asserted that the use of force against demonstrators is incompatible with democratic standards. The NSWON noted that the assembly was not an act of confrontation but a lawful and peaceful assertion of accountability, dignity and respect for customary jurisdiction. They have called for a transparent and impartial inquiry into the incident, insisting that those responsible for any excesses be held accountable.
Looking toward future relations between security forces and local communities, the NSWON urged the Assam Rifles to demonstrate restraint and wisdom. The organisation emphasized that long-term peace requires mutual respect and a recognition of historical Naga realities rather than coercive measures.
