Imphal: The Native People’s Committee Manipur (NPCM) slammed state officials this week for using military vehicles to move Kukis through Imphal. The move triggered outrage during a consultative meeting held Thursday at Awang Sekmai Koujengleima. NPCM Convener Ashang Kasar argued the state cannot claim peace while providing security for one side of the ongoing conflict.
Kasar did not mince words. "Giving security escorts for the movement of Kukis in Imphal is a direct affront to the people." He claimed Meitei and Naga residents remain trapped in certain areas, unable to travel freely. The group insists on halting Kuki movement until the government scraps the Suspension of Operation agreement.
Civil society groups from both the hills and valleys gathered to call for unity. They accused the Union government of backing Kuki narco-terrorists who target indigenous communities. Attendees reiterated demands set during a June 2 meeting at Makhan village. These include kicking the Assam Rifles out of Manipur, axing the current peace pact, and updating the National Register of Citizens before starting any new census work.
