Guwahati: Northeast Frontier Railway crews are digging out of a disaster in eastern Assam. Floodwaters from the Dikhow and Darika rivers tore through the Tinsukia Railway Division on the night of July 19. The deluge washed away 800 metres of track, cutting off vital transit routes in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.
Railway engineers and laborers are now swarming the damaged section between Simulguri Junction and Lakwa station. They moved heavy machinery into the area to fix the line. An official stated, "Railway tracks were washed away due to the floods, severely affecting train services under the Tinsukia Railway Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway. Railway engineers and workers are working to restore the damaged tracks at the earliest."
The water hit hard. It battered local villages including Lonpuriya, Bhotorbari, Darikiyal, Gomotha, and Abhayapuriya. Homes and infrastructure took a beating. Officials estimate that trains might roll again in three weeks. Senior railway brass are watching the work closely to keep things moving fast.
