Nongsum Residents Block UNLF Exit Over Security Fears

Imphal: Nongsum residents physically blocked Pambei-led United National Liberation Front cadres from leaving their village in Imphal East. Locals intervened after cadres began packing to move out. The standoff halted the relocation immediately.

Villagers argue the cadre presence acts as a vital buffer against Kuki militants based in nearby Khamenlok. They claim a retreat leaves the northern approaches to Imphal East wide open to attack. Residents fear for their homes. If the cadres go, families will flee to relief camps.

The community questioned the government's motives for the reported withdrawal. They asked if authorities intend to surrender territory to Kuki groups. Locals reminded state leaders of past promises regarding regional protection. "Residents stated that Nongsum, along with Pukhao and Uyumpok, has served as a strategic frontline protecting the northern approaches to Imphal East since the outbreak of the ethnic conflict in May 2023."

Tensions remain high in the region. Villagers vowed to prevent any future departure. They define any move to shift the cadres as a direct threat to the safety of Meitei populations in the area.
