NIA Arrests Ten in Major Manipur Violence Crackdown

Imphal: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended ten individuals in connection with a series of high-profile violence cases that have plagued Manipur over the past three years. This significant operation, conducted alongside the Manipur Police and the Central Reserve Police Force, targets individuals accused of crimes ranging from arms looting to murder and kidnapping.

Among those detained are four alleged members of the group Arambai Tenggol. The agency links these men to the February 2024 theft of firearms from the 5th India Reserve Battalion complex in Imphal East. During interrogation, the NIA stated that the four suspects "admitted to being members of Arambai Tenggol and acknowledged their involvement in the arms loot case." The agency is currently seeking ten days of custody to continue their investigation and recover missing evidence.

In a separate, highly concerning development, authorities arrested a serving Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Manipur Police, Salam Deepak Singh, regarding the rape and death of a Hmar woman in Jiribam district. Investigators allege that the victim, Zosangkim, was raped and burned alive in her home last November. The NIA claims evidence ties both the officer and a second suspect, Ningthoujam Boboy Singh, to the crime, which they believe was carried out by militants linked to Arambai Tenggol and the Manipur People's Army.

The sweep also addressed several other major incidents, including the Punjab National Bank robbery in Ukhrul, an attack on CRPF personnel at Narainsena, and an ambush on the Chief Minister's convoy. Officials confirmed that these arrests mark a major escalation in the effort to bring accountability to the region. With investigations still active, the NIA indicated that further arrests remain likely as they probe these deeply entrenched acts of organized violence.
