Fresh Attack on Assam Rifles, Killing Two; Naga Youth Body Calls for Crackdown

Imphal: Condemning the alleged attack on Assam Rifles personnel along National Highway-202, a Naga youth organisation blamed the armed Kuki militants for the incident and appealed to the security agencies to conduct intensified operations in the area.

Khanuithot-Khon (Voice of the Naga Youth) in its press statement on 6 July 2026 stated that the attack took place around 2:00 p.m. near Lungshangkong on NH-202. The organization described the incident as part of what it called a continuing pattern of violence in the highway corridor.

The organisation also alleged that the attack was meant to distract the security forces from the ongoing investigation into the recent abduction and murder of six Naga civilians. These claims are presented as the organisation’s assessment and have not been independently verified by NEWire.

There have been several incidents of violence on NH-202 in the last few months, including earlier attacks on civilians, the statement said. Khanuithot-Khon said the continued insecurity along the route has added to growing concerns about public safety and regional stability.

The youth body appealed to the Assam Rifles, other Central security agencies and the Manipur Government to conduct what it called as “immediate and coordinated operations” against armed groups operating in the Litan and Yaolen areas. It also urged the Government of India to review the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement with armed groups, as "continued violations of the ceasefire framework are enough reason to reconsider".

The organisation ended by calling on the authorities to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the recent killings of six Naga civilians as well as the reported attack on Assam Rifles personnel, emphasising the need for impartial investigations and accountability.

At the time of publication, the Assam Rifles, the Manipur Police, the Government of Manipur or representatives of the groups mentioned in the press release were not available to comment officially to the allegations. NEWire has not independently verified the allegations in the statements.

The report follows a press release issued by Khanuithot-Khon on 6 July 2026. The allegations in the release are the organisation’s claims and should not be taken as verified facts unless proven by official investigations or independent evidence.
