New Video Footage Intensifies Custodial Torture Allegations Against Assam Police

Itanagar: A fresh video clip has deepened the controversy surrounding the arrest of Arunachal Pradesh anti-drug activist Gumin Mize. The footage, which shows visible bruising on Mize as he was being escorted to court, has prompted widespread allegations of custodial torture by the Assam Police.

Mize was arrested earlier this month by Bihpuria Police in Itanagar on charges related to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act. While authorities claim the arrest stemmed from a firearm incident, Mize’s supporters maintain he acted in self-defense using a legally licensed weapon. They also suspect the legal action against him is a coordinated effort by drug syndicates aimed at silencing his long-term anti-drug work across the region.

Tensions rose after Lakhimpur Senior Superintendent of Police Gunendra Deka dismissed earlier photographic evidence of injuries as AI-generated. Members of the Adi Students’ Union, who obtained the new footage, are now demanding a forensic investigation into the video. They argue the visible marks directly refute official denials and suggest a deliberate cover-up by police officials.

Representatives from the Takam Mising Porin Kebang have since visited the police station to investigate the incident. The situation has ignited significant public anger, with several organizations calling for accountability and strict action against any officers found to have engaged in misconduct.
