Shillong: The National People’s Party turned 14 on Tuesday. The event also marked the 79th birth anniversary of the party founder, the late Purno Agitok Sangma. Party members gathered in Shillong to honor his legacy. The date serves as a dual celebration for the organization.
Deputy Chief Minister and state president Prestone Tynsong reflected on the path the party traveled since its start. He led the tributes. Tynsong described the 14-year journey as a difficult one, especially after the NPP took the lead in the Meghalaya government in 2018. He said, "The NPP has successfully addressed several long-standing issues that previous governments had been reluctant to tackle."
Taking control of state affairs for the first time acted as a major milestone for the party. This experience helped the group grow and mature. Tynsong claimed that years of experience now allow the organization to handle state challenges with more care. The late PA Sangma remains the central figure of the party identity.
