Itanagar: Botanists identified a rare flowering plant in the wet evergreen forests of Arunachal Pradesh. The species, known as Ophiorrhiza chownai, grows in the Lower Dibang Valley. It belongs to the coffee family. The plant sits at an elevation of 618 metres.

Scientists classified the discovery as Critically Endangered. Experts estimate fewer than 200 individuals remain in the wild. This confirms the site as a top priority for habitat protection and further study.

Researchers named the plant after Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein to recognize his work in environmental conservation. The politician thanked the team for their efforts. "I am deeply honoured that the researchers have chosen to name this newly discovered species after me. My heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in this remarkable scientific work," Mein said on social media.

The discovery bolsters the reputation of the Eastern Himalayas as a major center for biodiversity. Officials hope the find encourages more research into the state’s undocumented species.
