Agartala: Tripura Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul is heading to South Africa. He will represent the state at the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference in Cape Town. His selection marks a major moment for the region. It puts the state on the global map.
The decision followed an All India Presiding Officers meeting on Tuesday. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla chaired the session at the Parliament House Annexe in New Delhi. The four hour meeting ran from 2 pm to 6 pm. Officials mapped out the schedule, the study tour, and the final list of delegates.
India plans to send a 125 member group to the summit. Paul will travel with his wife as part of this delegation. The event starts on September 11. Participants will focus on legislative innovation and democratic governance. Following the main talks, the group will head out on an international study tour. They return to India on October 2.
Officials see this trip as a win for the state. Paul intends to showcase local legislative success. As one official stated, his participation is "an important recognition of Tripura’s contribution to India’s parliamentary traditions." This platform allows the state to broadcast its grassroots democratic growth to a wider audience.
