New Financial Scandal Rocks Meghalaya Cricket Association

Shillong: Trouble is rising for suspended Meghalaya Cricket Association secretary Rayonald Kharkamni and former treasurer Dhrubajyoti Thakuria. Fresh reports reveal the duo authorized payments over 1.55 crore to an Assam vendor. The auditor, Deloitte, flagged the company multiple times for failing to file GST returns since September 2023. The vendor lost its registration in May 2025. Payments continued anyway.

These transactions bypassed the MCA Apex Council. This violates the association constitution. The crisis follows Kharkamni’s suspension by MCA president James P.K. Sangma. He faced heat for allegedly hiding sexual harassment complaints involving a U-23 women's team coach. That matter is now before the ombudsman.

Kharkamni dismissed the new fraud claims. He pointed the finger at the accounts department for failing to verify tax status. He claimed the Apex Council gave him full authority to clear vendor bills. "The Apex Council authorises the Secretary to clear all payments to vendors. Therefore, the question of saying that the Apex Council did not authorise the payments does not arise," Kharkamni stated.

He denied that auditors ever demanded a payment freeze. He insisted his office followed every procedure. Questions remain about oversight and governance. The Meghalaya High Court is already involved in the internal power struggle. Chaos continues to grip the association.
