NEHUTA President Prof Lakhon Kma Rules Himself Out of NEHU Vice Chancellor Race

Shillong: North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association president Prof Lakhon Kma has officially stated he is not a candidate for the university’s upcoming Vice Chancellor vacancy. He clarified that he currently fails to meet the mandatory eligibility criteria established for the leadership position.

Under current regulations, an applicant must have at least ten years of experience as a professor. Prof Kma noted that he only reached the rank of professor in 2017, meaning he will not meet the requirement for several more years. He emphasized the importance of transparency regarding his status to clear up any lingering public ambiguity.

The Ministry of Education recently published an advertisement seeking applications for the role. The position will become vacant on July 26, when the term of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla, concludes. The official criteria for the post demand a distinguished academician with a proven record of leadership and institutional commitment.

Prof Kma stated that as the head of the teachers’ association, he intends to uphold established university norms rather than bypass them. He added that the faculty, student body, and non-teaching staff are committed to working together to ensure the university appoints a competent and capable leader to fill the role.
