Neeraj Chopra Named to India Commonwealth Games Squad Pending Qualification

Shillong: Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has been included in India’s 32-member athletics squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. His final participation depends on reaching the Athletics Federation of India qualifying mark of 82.61m in future competitions. The Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2.

Chopra has been sidelined since the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo due to a back injury. Currently training in Switzerland with his team, the javelin thrower is expected to resume competition soon. AFI selection committee chairman Adille Sumariwalla confirmed the athlete's recovery status during a press briefing, stating, "Neeraj has recovered from his back injury. He is now training fit and is getting ready to compete probably in the next 10 days or so."

The federation has also finalized other key athletes for the squad, including Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur, Gulveer Singh, Tejaswin Shankar, Parul Chaudhary, and Priyanka. Additionally, Rohit Yadav and Yashvir Singh have secured their spots in the men's javelin event after meeting requirements at the Indian Athletics Series.

Triple jumper Selva Prabhu also faces a conditional path to the Games. Although he recently won the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the United States, the AFI requires him to prove his current form at the Inter State Championships in Bhubaneswar later this month. The federation noted that it does not account for NCAA meet results due to inconsistencies in doping control protocols.
