Security Disperses Violent Protest at Manipur's RIMS Hospital

Imphal: Security personnel deployed tear gas on Monday, June 15, to break up a crowd of demonstrators gathered at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Manipur. The unrest began after protesters arrived at the hospital to voice dissatisfaction regarding the care provided to three injured Kuki individuals.

These patients were recently admitted to the facility after suffering injuries during a gunfight near the villages of Leilon Vaiphei and Konsakhul in the Kangpokpi district. Tensions rose significantly when demonstrators moved past the hospital gates and attempted to enter the emergency ward, leading to a direct confrontation with staff and security.

Authorities fired tear gas to clear the grounds and regain control of the facility. While the immediate area was dispersed, security remains stationed around the perimeter as a precaution against further volatility. Local officials reported no additional injuries or arrests following the incident, though as one report noted, "tensions continued to remain high as groups of protesters persisted with demonstrations outside the RIMS premises."
