Shillong: A 20-year-old labourer was killed and another was seriously injured on Saturday morning when a concrete slab collapsed during renovation work at a property owned by businessman and former MLA Ngaitlang Dhar. The incident occurred at approximately 10 am in Nongpoh as a team of four workers attempted to dismantle a wall inside the building.
The structural failure trapped two men beneath the debris. Local residents rushed to the site to assist, pulling 19-year-old Solar Lymphuid from the rubble. He was transported to Civil Hospital in Nongpoh, where he remains under medical care. Jelin Mangu, 20, could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene following a lengthy recovery operation.
Two other workers, 19-year-old Nalor Myrsing and 22-year-old Turbor Damblong, escaped the collapse without injury. All four members of the crew are residents of Umpathaw village in the Ri-Bhoi district. Authorities have since transported Mangu’s body to the hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The tragedy has prompted an immediate investigation by the Nongpoh Police Station. Officials are currently reviewing whether mandatory safety measures were followed during the demolition, with police stating that they have "launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse."
