Kohima: Nagaland University has concluded a five-day training program designed to equip local farmers with modern poultry production skills. The initiative, hosted at the Medziphema campus by the School of Agricultural Sciences, aimed to increase local output and reduce the state’s heavy reliance on imported meat products.
Dr. Mary N. Odyuo, who led the program, noted that many local entrepreneurs struggle with outdated housing, poor disease management, and a lack of technical resources. "The training sought to bridge these gaps and promote scientific poultry farming practices," she stated during the closing session. The course covered essential topics including chick management, vaccination, feeding systems, and enterprise record keeping.
Twelve participants from across the state attended the sessions, gaining both theoretical and practical experience. Prof. Catherine Rutsa, Head of the Department of Livestock Production and Management, highlighted the importance of such capacity-building efforts for local youth, noting the high level of engagement from those in attendance.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dipak Sinha emphasized that expanding local livestock production is vital for regional self-sufficiency. He suggested that future programs should distinguish between the needs of beginners and experienced farmers. Furthermore, Sinha proposed integrating financial education into these workshops to help entrepreneurs navigate credit facilities, alongside creating a community radio platform to provide farmers with direct access to expert advice.
