Kohima: Nagaland University has launched a new initiative to strengthen the state's poultry industry by providing specialized training to local entrepreneurs. The five-day program, which took place from June 1 to June 5 at the Medziphema campus, focused on teaching modern production methods to help reduce the region's heavy reliance on imported poultry products.
Organized by the farmers' cell of the School of Agricultural Sciences, the course provided participants with hands-on experience in essential areas such as poultry housing, chick management, disease prevention, and vaccination. Attendees also received instruction in record-keeping and enterprise management to ensure their businesses remain sustainable.
Associate Professor Mary N. Odyuo, who led the initiative, explained that the training is designed to bridge the gap between traditional practices and modern industry requirements. She stated, "The five-day hands-on training on poultry production technology was organised to equip farmers, youth, and aspiring entrepreneurs with scientific knowledge and practical skills in poultry production, enabling them to pursue poultry farming as a sustainable livelihood and enterprise in Nagaland."
Department head Professor Catherine Rutsa emphasized that skill-building programs are vital for the local livestock sector. She noted that participants showed high levels of engagement throughout the week, gaining the technical knowledge necessary to overcome common obstacles like inadequate feeding systems and limited access to disease management practices.
