Kohima: The State Election Commission of Nagaland has issued mandatory identification guidelines for the upcoming town council polls. Voters casting ballots on June 16 must present an approved document to verify their identity at the polling station.

The elections are scheduled for Ward 11 in Chümoukedima Town Council, Ward 8 in Wokha Town Council, and Ward 9 in Atoizu Town Council. To participate, electors must provide an Indian Passport, driving licence, Aadhaar card, or a government service identity card. Other acceptable documents include a bank or post office passbook with a photograph, a PAN card, a pension document with a photograph, or an Indigenous Inhabitant Certificate issued by local authorities.

Officials noted that documents held by the head of the family may be used to identify other family members if their identities remain verifiable. Presiding officers have the discretion to overlook minor errors in details like names or addresses if they are satisfied with the voter's identity. Despite these allowances, the Commission stated that no elector will be allowed to cast his/her vote without producing any of the above documents as prescribed.
