Kohima: The Nagaland Department of Youth Resources and Sports launched two major initiatives this week to support the long-term career and financial goals of young athletes. Secretary Anthony Ngullie inaugurated the Mentorship Programme for Holistic Development of Student Athletes and the Skill-Based Economic Sustenance Programme at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima.

These programs serve the athletes of the Indira Gandhi Academy, aiming to bridge the gap between rigorous athletic training and future employment prospects. The mentorship initiative pairs 11 department officers with roughly 140 athletes. These mentors will hold regular sessions through March to provide guidance on academics, mental health, and life skills.

Addressing the launch, Ngullie noted that coaches remain focused on athletic performance, but these mentors will bridge a critical support gap. He said, "While coaches would continue to focus on sporting performance, mentors would help athletes address educational and personal challenges, promoting their overall development."

Starting June 11, the second initiative focuses on vocational training for athletes aged 15 and older. Participants will learn practical trades such as mobile phone repair, food processing, baking, and floristry. According to department officer Naroenla, each one-month module includes two weeks of expert instruction followed by two weeks of hands-on practice. Officials hope these twin programs will provide athletes with the tools to achieve lasting economic independence alongside their sporting achievements.
