Kohima: The Nagaland Department of Youth Resources and Sports has launched two initiatives to support the long-term career prospects of young athletes. Secretary Anthony Ngullie inaugurated the Mentorship Programme for Holistic Development of Student Athletes and the Skill-Based Economic Sustenance Programme at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima on June 9.
These programs serve trainees at the Indira Gandhi Academy, offering guidance that extends beyond athletic training to include education, personal growth, and financial independence. Eleven departmental officers are now serving as mentors to approximately 140 athletes. This year-long initiative, which runs through March 2027, focuses on academic performance, emotional well-being, and future career planning through regular counseling and guidance sessions.
Addressing the launch event, Ngullie stated, "The effort represents a progressive step towards integrating sports development with personal growth and professional preparedness." He emphasized that these programs allow officials to support athletes in areas that go beyond the typical scope of coaches and trainers.
Complementing the mentorship effort is a vocational training program for athletes aged 15 and older. Starting June 11 and running through October, this initiative provides practical training in income-generating skills. Athletes can choose from courses including mobile phone repair, food processing, crochet, baking, and floristry. By offering hands-on instruction from industry experts, the department aims to create alternative career pathways for participants that will sustain them once their competitive sporting years conclude.
