Kohima: Nagaland Minister for Health and Family Welfare P Paiwang Konyak is calling for a unified effort to enforce a forthcoming one-year statewide ban on tobacco and nicotine products. During a departmental review meeting held on June 9, Konyak urged civil society organizations, churches, and community leaders to back the initiative to protect public health and the younger generation.
The state government recently announced the ban, which covers the manufacture, storage, transport, and sale of any food items containing tobacco or nicotine. This decision follows guidelines from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. While the policy is confirmed, officials have not yet disclosed a specific start date for the enforcement. Konyak has instructed all stakeholders to coordinate closely with police and district administrations to ensure the ban is effective.
Beyond the tobacco initiative, the health department reviewed its ongoing projects and medical readiness. Regarding a potential Ebola threat, State Nodal Officer Dr. Nyan Kikon confirmed that no cases have been detected in the region. Despite this, Konyak directed officials to maintain strict surveillance and stay prepared for potential emergencies. The meeting also covered the status of critical infrastructure, including the development of Mon Medical College and the proposed AIIMS at Naga Ki.
Konyak emphasized the necessity of strong community involvement for these healthcare goals. He stated, "Such a measure would significantly contribute to improving public health and safeguarding the younger generation from the harmful effects of tobacco consumption." Department leaders concluded the session by reaffirming their commitment to expanding service delivery and engagement at the grassroots level.
